For the new college grads who are living at home: What are you all doing about your relationship? Is it over?
For those of us in the class of 2010 (yes, even those of us in good colleges with good degrees) who can’t find a job and are in a committed relatinship — what are you all doing? I know most of us will be living at home with parents for at least 6 months. What is you and your girlfriends/boyfriends planning to do? Call the relationship over? Long distance relationship where the girlfriend flies to your parents house to visit? What’s everybody doing?
Couples who are in a committed relationship will work out a plan that is good for them. They will busy themselves with job hunting and put the time together on hold until their financial situation improves and they are employed.

Are all the rumors about sugar gliders true?
Our family is thinking about getting a sugar glider. Recently, I have heard that you need to buy two or more or else it will be very depressed and some other disturbing rumors. We are thinking about getting one around december or so once I have enough money to buy one. Could an experienced owner give me a little information about them like whether you have to buy two?
I would do more research if you’re still asking questions about these guys. Here are a few things: They are not for the casual pet owner and require lots of time and patience for them to be comfortable enough to bond with you, which unfortunately sometimes they don’t do. I have 2 and only one is completely bonded after 3 years of work. The other is still a little skittish but sweet and attentive nonetheless. They can live 12-15 years or more. Hopefully you guys are prepared for that. They cannot be litter box trained and require a large cage for movement and toys. They will require nail trimmings and exotic vet visits which add up. I would not recommend a glider if you cannot afford the vet. They can keep you up with barking (something like small dogs) and playing all night because they are nocturnal. Mine wake up around 8 PM or so and stay awake until around 6 AM. Hopefully you have a schedule that will accommodate them. Work, school, traveling, etc. can really interfere with the time needed for these guys, which is DAILY. Typically you should get them in sets of 2 or more, but it’s not impossible to keep them by themselves. I’ve stated ad nauseum that I have a friend that has had his for 8 years and the glider is doing fine. But I’ve also stated that his profession allows him to work from home so he’s able to be extra attentive to his pet, average of 6-9 hours a day. So there is nothing saying that you MUST own more than one glider. Rule most people use that I know with gliders: 1-2 hrs a day for multiple gliders; 3-5 hours for a glider being kept singly. The more time spent, the better and the people I know that are doing well with a single glider spend upwards of 7 hours a day with their gliders on them at all times. I will say that owning more than one helps them socialize with you better, but isn’t absolutely necessary. Having a buddy to sleep with during the day when you’re not there typically makes them happier babies. I got 2 because I wanted them to be able to have someone to bond with while I’m away. Vitamins, especially Calcium is important, especially when they are joeys. Low calcium can lead to leg paralysis. I usually avoid canned, processed, or packaged foods or pellets as additives and preservatives (like glucose, sucrose, fructose, corn syrup, or corn derivatives) are sometimes used. There is one that I use as the occasional treat, but not as a staple in the diet. Food preparation can take time. I do BML or Leadbeater’s in addition to fruit, veggies, and other protein. Observation and attention is key as these guys can self mutilate if they get depressed or lonely. They’re rewarding and wonderful if you have the patience to work with them but be prepared for a pet that will require a lot of time and determination. Hope that helps some. Oh and one more note: PLEASE make sure that you get them from a USDA licensed breeder. This ensures that the glider you purchased is healthy and within regulation. Getting them from a store is no better than getting your little guy from a puppy mill. licensed breeders are the way to go for a healthy happy glider.
