Give advice on the importance of physical activity in relation to body image & self esteem?
Take me as an example if you wish… I used to be on a prescription drug against anxiety Effexor 75. this medication made me feel very tired and sluggish and exhausted … and, yes, of course it’s also my fault, I have a hard time always saying ”NO” if there is some ice cream.. I never ever eat a lot but on occasion I ate more of the wrong foods and because I was on the medication I was too exhausted to exercise, and it had a tremenduous negative effect on my body image.. my weight just balooned up.. I gained 40 lbs.. I was a tiny 110 lb woman at 5ft 4.. and within 2 years of taking Effexor, that make me really lethargic.. and people I meet in everyday life who did not know me when i was just 110 lbs don’t look at me as if I was ”fat” but the people who used to know me back then with the petite slender body.. the make crude and cutting remarks.. and I feel like a person of 3rd class.. as if really everything that matters about a person ”is only skindeep” that all that matters is what you see, not the personality I have.. but the weight gain.. that of course did work on my self esteem and I have not the same self esteem as I had with 110 lbs when I had problems to even go into a boutique for petites.. and the sizes there often were to big.. No I have to wear Size L…but I also have good news.. I have been able to stop the drug effexor and I was right, and talked to my doctor.. It was to a great part the fault of the drug.. and to 50 % my own fault that I let my weight get this big.. but since I stopped the drug.. 3 weeks ago, i am on the treadmill every single day and I work out on it for 2 hours .. ”every day” I eat a lot more healthily.. I won’t deniy myself everything.. but if I crave something sweet, I have a low fat yoghourt instead or a banana..or some fruit….and only on occasion do I eat the stuff I want.. then I think it’s ok, as long as I eat just a bit of it…and learn more self discipline that I don’t need 3 scoops of ice cream as I love it, I take one scoop instead.. I won’t stop depriving myself.. I am not a model, I am 46 years old and until age 44 I had a BMI at 5ft4 that was on the very low range of normal.. . now I am overweight quite a bit.. but I am losing some bits of weight every day and I see the difference from when I was on the the prescription drug and could not exercise and now when I exercise 2 hours every day.. My body feels toned a lot more just in 3 weeks of doing that.. and I don’t have cellulite on my legs.. but I still have to continue.. I don’t want to get down to 110 lbs again.. I am not a teenager, I am quite happy with 135 lbs..that is ok for almost 47 years old .. and I will try to keep that weight and continue with my exercise.. ”And to hell really with those people of my past who dare to judge me just because I gained some weight and who ridiculed me.. I know human nature better now and I know who is superficial and who is a genuine friend.. and I am not sorry to lose along with the pouns I am shedding some of those superficial people who really believe that looks are everything and personality and character are fine but who ostracize and made fun of me when they saw me ”as the ”larger person.”
I do the physical activity now to get my stamina back.. my energy, and to look into the mirror and to say.. ”Not bad for an old chick…you look fine for your age, and most importantly I also do this for my health.. I had no high cholesterol, no high blood pressure, no dieabetes, but why risk ill heath due to extra weight.. so I lose it for myself and for health reasons and for regaining confidence in myself.. because if you look into the mirror and you see that all of a sudden you are 40 lbs heavier than you used to be.. it’s the friends and people who make cutting remarks that hurt your self esteem but we all have eyes and we can see ourselves in the mirror.. and I definitley am still not and even less was satisfied with this weight gain.. I did not like the looks of myself either.. so I lose it because I want to look in that mirror and not think ”Vera you look fabulous, but I want to look in that mirror and think..”Vera, you look healthy and you are within your normal BMI and you don’t have to be ashamed of your body…XXX
