How do I make a cipher in python?
Specifically I want to be able to instantly use any of the “rot” methods of ciphering (You go x amount of letters ahead, ex: In rot3, a->d)
Also I must express that I am a COMPLETE newcomer to programming at all, so a full step by step would be helpful.
The programming language doesn’t much matter though with some it will be more difficult than others. I have this exact program written in C, but I won’t post it. I have to check ans see if I managed to post the code for it. I might be able to send you a URL for the source code in C.
First, I’ll admit I don’t know the details of Python. I’m mostly a QB/VB/C/C++ programmer. So with that in mind, I’m not going to go into language specifics. Python isn’t that difficult to understand from what I have worked with though. Also, this is not the best way to do this but it should be the easiest to understand.
You are working with what is basically a Caesar cipher. In fact the historic rot3 cipher is usually credited to Caesar though the other rotations are not.
I suggest hard coding a known text message that you have encrypted by hand so that you know it is working correctly for testing purposes. When the program is working, you can add file I/O or some other input/output method to read in plaintext and output ciphertext or the other way around.
The very first step is that you’ll want to convert all the letters of text into upper case. Make the program do this. Do not do it manually. While you are at it, you may want to add an option to remove spaces and punctuation. You should also check for characters that are not punctuation or letters. You should be able to work with ASCII codes to figure out what letters need changed and what needs removed. Now, all your letters will be in the ASCII code range of 65-90 if you did everything right so far.
The next step is the actual rotation. You can rotate the letters in place and maintain the 65-90 range or you can subtract 65 and work with numbers in the 0-25 range. Either way will work. Remember that if you rotate the number over the 90 or 25, then you have to subtract 26 to return the number back to the normal alphabet. When you decrypt, you have to work in reverse and the 65-90 range has the advantage of not producing negative numbers when you rotate in the opposite direction.
Lastly, you need to print the results. If you reduced the numbers to the 0-25 range, then you’ll need to add 65 to get them back to normal upper case letter range.
To do all this you’ll need to use a loop at each step. Don’t bother trying to get fancy and do it all in one loop and in virtually one step even though it is possible. The important part is learning how this works and not how efficient you can make your program. Efficiency will come with experience.
You may want to print out the results between each step so you can verify that each step is working correctly. This is a common troubleshooting technique as well as a common way to show how a program is working at various stages. Don’t forget that you may be working with unprintable characters or at least characters that may not appear as letters in some stages. So, print the numeric value of the characters instead.
Depending on where you are at in learning, this little project may be easy, difficult or impossible. You need to know how to use loops, modify character values, and display your results. If you don’t understand this, you’ll need to study and perhaps review the various sections of the book or tutorial.
