If you’re frustrated with shopping for hand cream for age spots, here’s a little help. There are safe and effective compounds on the market that will lighten the spot, over time, but one of the most commonly used ingredients for this purpose is a probable carcinogen.
It is called hydroquinone. It was used for many years, but has now been banned in a number of countries, due to the perceived cancer risk. Creams containing it are irritating. They often cause redness and irritation. They can even cause an allergic reaction accompanied by the appearance of dark, black bumps on the skin. The reaction requires dermatologic treatment. Otherwise, the bumps can be permanent.
Other solutions that are commonly recommended include mild acids and bleaching agents. These are also irritating. They are not as unsafe as hydroquinone, but should still be used with caution.
How quickly you can fade a spot of this kind depends largely upon how old you are. Although they are called “age spots”, they really have little to do with getting older. If you are under 40, a hand cream for age spots may work very quickly. If you are over 40, the process may take longer.
Once we pass 40, our skin’s turn-over rate slows down. Throughout our lives we are constantly sloughing off and replacing the outermost layer of the epidermis. Cells slough off at different rates on different parts of the body. On the arm, an estimated 1300 cells per hour per square centimeter are sloughed off. We often “see” them as dust in the house.
As we get older, the sloughing off part stays at about the same rate, but the production of new cells to replace them slows down. Eventually, this causes the skin to become thinner and more easily damaged. It may also start to sag.
There is a hand cream for age spots that works faster; regardless of how old you are, because it stimulates production of new cells. Not only does this increase the cell turn-over rate, it will also increase thickness, with time.
The key ingredients to look for are Functional Keratin and Extra-pone Nut Grass. Functional Keratin is a protein complex that has been shown to increase skin cell proliferation by as much as 160% after three days of use. Extra-pone inhibits melanin production, which is what the darkened areas are composed of.
You may not be able to find these ingredients in a hand cream for age spots, but they are available in whitening face creams. Body lotion containing Functional Keratin may be all that you need. These patches fade over time, without inhibiting melanin production, as long as you avoid overexposure to the sun.
Now that you are armed with this information, when you are outside working or playing for more than 15 minutes, consider wearing gloves or using a sun-block that contains zinc oxide. Light, disappearing sunscreens are not as effective. Some of them may actually cause free radical damage. If it contains the right ingredients, body lotion and hand cream for age spots can make you look younger and prevent free radical damage. You just have read the label.

Try a lotion called “Lac-Hydran”. You can buy it at CVS and Walgreens, Rite-Aid. We used it on our patients who had very dry, thin skin to prevent skin tears. It is a bit expensive, but works great! Many of my patients had it “prescribed” to them by their doctors, but you can buy it OTC. You can also try “Aquaphor”. It is a petroleum based cream that works great too. This is what I personally use. My skin gets so dry it cracks and bleeds when the weather gets cold, so I know how you feel!
