Am I on the right track to a competitive college?
I’m in ninth grade right now. It’s been kind of hard adjusting to high school, and I haven’t really been doing many extracurricular activities. I have art classes every week and I joined the SPA (Students for Political Awareness) club at my school. I’ll also going to take tennis classes like I did last year. I already have some volunteer hours at my local library from the summer. And on top of all of this, I’m taking the most challenging classes available for 9th grade at my school. So far, I have A’s in all my classes, except for a B in science and PE.
Is there anything else I can do to increase my chances of getting into a UC? Thank you!
From the details you’ve given, it seems as if you’re starting out on the right path. Colleges, especially competitive institutions, just love the following things:
1. Grades. This is an obvious answer. Working hard in school will definitely get you places in college. If you really want to make yourself a competitive candidate for university than you’ll need a strong GPA and good standardized test scores. So study, study, study!
2. Classes. Along with grades, you need to make sure that you’re enrolling in some strong classes. This means taking advantage of honors, upper-level, or advanced-placement classes if your school offers them. Looks like you’re on the right track taking the most challenging classes available for the 9th grade at your school. Additionally, make sure you’re fulfilling more than the generalized requirements for your school. Many high schools only require two years of math and/or two years of science. This just isn’t good enough for a competitive school. Try to take four years of all the major branches; English, science, math, history and a FOREIGN LANGUAGE! The latter is especially important. Many high schools lack a foreign language requirement, but it’s honestly one of the best ways to stand out on college applications. Schools want to see that you’re interested enough in international affairs to make the effort to learn another language. Even three years of a foreign language can put you a step ahead of your peers for college admissions.
3. Volunteerism and Community Involvement. Competitive schools want students that have compassion and empathy for other living beings, students that care about their communities and will go the extra mile to help out someone in need. Volunteerism is the best way to show this. If I could go back and do one thing differently from my high school years I would have volunteered more. A LOT more. Some hours from your local library will help, but consistent hours at one or a few local institutions will help even more. Soup kitchen need some help over the holidays? Be there. Local SPCA or humane society need someone to walk the dogs or clean out kennels? You’re their go-to-girl. Local charity group need some help organizing a bake sale to raise funds? You could make cupcakes and paint banners! See what I mean? It doesn’t take much time to give a little, and sometimes giving a little can mean a lot.
4. Activism and Extracirricular Activities. Competitive schools like well-rounded individuals. This means someone who not only exceeds in school and volunteers, but participates in sports and other activities. From what you’ve said, it seems like you’re doing okay on this front. Art classes, the SPA, and tennis are all good assets to help round-out your personality.
5. Thinking Ahead. If you’re in 9th grade and you’re already thinking about college, then you’re definitely on the right track. Choosing a school takes time, as do college and scholarship applications. Although it’s one of the hardest things for young people to do, forming a set of definitive goals can be one of the best ways to set yourself apart from your peers in the admissions process. Most people (understandably) only have a vague set of ideas of their goals for college. If you can show college admissions that you’re dedicated to making it through school and that you have a pretty good idea of what you want to do, you’ll make a much better impression than those candidates that hrm and haw their way through an application presenting generalities, wanting to continue with higher education because at some point they stop letting you go to high school. Form a clear plan, present yourself as someone who strongly wants to complete your goals, and when the time comes, show college admissions (through your writing) that you’re going places. Even if your goals change your freshman year of college, the college admissions board will be assured that you’re the kind of student to take a hit and land on your feet.
Try not to get too stressed out now about college admissions. It’s great to be thinking about ways to improve your chances as a freshman. But remember, you do have the better part of three and a half years left in high school! If you’re looking for things you can change right now to help you on your way, I’d say volunteer as much as you can and make sure you’re taking a foreign language. Otherwise, have fun with high school! Enjoy your time and your friends and the experience of growing up!

Help me decide on a brand of cat food?
Right now, we are — long story — feeding a mix of a Eukanuba food ‘for less active indoor cats,’ a Royal Canin one for older kittens, and Hill’s Science Diet Nature’s Best.
1 I suspect the Hill’s is the ‘best,’ but it doesn’t seem to be the favourite.
2 They are just getting out of kittenhood, but still like the Royal Canin, and I’ve heard kitten food is good for cats — true or false? They’re still young, and had poor diets before we got them.
3 The ‘less active’ — one has been getting a bit podgy after being spayed.
Should I keep feeding the mix?
Or is there a really good one that’s going to suit two cats just under a year old, with one ‘a bit podgy,’ etc?
Those are all dry. But a small serving of wet food is demanded and provided every morning, and as for that — we’ve used Nutro, Blue Spa, Iams, and many other of the overpriced varieties. A variety there seems to be what’s wanted, but feel free to comment on that.
None of the foods you are feeding are good quality. Also you shouldn’t be mixing brands together except during a switch to a new food. This disturbs the balance of the foods.
Instead of low quality foods look for good quality foods with no corn, wheat, soy or beet pulp (all things cats do NOT need, that are common allergens, aren’t particularly digestable for cats & have no nutritionla value to cats who are meat eaters not veggie/grain eaters.

Canned food is healthier then dry food contrary to popular belief. It contains less, fat, more meat protein, adds moisture to the diet…cats fed at least some canned food daily are less prone to UTI/bladder/kidney stones . Canned food does NOT cause dental problems (nor does dry prevent dental problems).Cats do not chew theri foods like humans do they only break food into pieces of a suitable size to swallow. Food doesn’t stay in the mouth long enough to cause dental issues.
Also the spayed cat requires less calories since it no longer is being driven by hormones.
